Anyone take the holistic approach to vaccinations?

My household currently has dogs and people - none of us get any kinds of vaccinations. One dog will be titred for rabies immunity but the other is 14 and won't get another vaccine. I've never had a flu shot nor a pneumonia shot. I've also never had the flu OR pneumonia even though I get bronchitis once a year. When I was a child we got vaccinated against polio but not much else. More and more, research is showing that our vaccine protocols are harmful.

So it makes me wonder as I read information on vaccines in longhorns. It does seem there are some people who believe the vaccines weaken the immune system, but the vast majority - like in the dog world - give a vaccine protocol as a matter of course.

RE: Barbed wire fencing

Thanks - my fence is four string but it's held alot of cattle so I might be able to get away with it if I can rebuild it in the next year to five string, if I get calves now?

We are on a private road but whereas for many years there were only three houses within miles out here there are now many houses and more all the time and livestock escaping no longer means a phone call but threats, calls to animal control, nasty letters, neighbors not speaking to you for years, etc.

We just moved back after living out of state for several years - I was planning on getting ready for livestock this winter and getting some in the spring but the county is threatening to remove my open land tax exemption and charge me rollback taxes to 2007 if I don't get livestock by the end of the month. My dad gave me the land before he died and there's been no ag on it since except for a few goats and some haying. Unfortunately, I dont' have funds nor time to build a new fence, add pens and a chute and buy cattle all in one week.

The existing fence is in pretty good shape. I was actually feeling kind of confident about the whole thing until I looked at a photo of a Longhorn bull and it looks like my fences would be like golf tees trying to hold back Gigantaur.

My neighbor, who is going to help me with this venture, is insistent that we need a bull. I have some experience with cattle and even bulls but there has never been anything more than a miniature bull inside the fence. The cattle have mostly been cows.

Aah, I dont' want to talk myself out of it if it's something that's doable. The Longhorn ranch that was right up the road from us was disbanded and sold for retail after the owners passed away and I see no longhorns around here any more.

RE: You can't do anything with them?!

There are several things that one can do with steers. I know some breeders would not have one on their place because they just eat and don't produce. Others have steers to draw attention to their property. Steers can be good in determining heat cycles. If one has the time to train, halter break, there are a number of groups, individuals and other options for photo ops. I have even seen where some Chamber of Commerce offices have referred visitor to their town to longhorn breeders to see and photograph their steers. I recently heard of a professional photographer that was looking for a trained steer (or any longhorn) to add to his photo shoot options.

RE: Barbed wire fencing

All I have ever had my longhorns held in were pastures with 5 string barbed wire and have never had a problem...as long as the fence is in decent condition you should be fine. Had a friend one time that had more of a net wire and they kept complaining that they had to keep repairing it because when the cattle walked by and got to close and ran their horns along it, it would just destroy it.

I would say, check with your state laws just to make sure there are no specific requirements if the property is adjacent to a road. Some states require special conditions on the fencing depending on traffic.

RE: Four Important Ways to Avoid Problems

Thanks very much. I am seriously contemplating getting a few (very few) longhorns to put on my 15 acres which has been fallow for several years. my biggest question is the fence, and I started another thread with a question.

It's been many years since I've taken care of cattle. I never would have thought about the metal/plastic problem had I not read about it here and other places, and I am very grateful to know to check for those things. We USED to be totally isolated, but now have neighbors and trash containers.

Barbed wire fencing

I'd like to get three longhorns - some people say barbed wire is fine, that fences which will contain other types of cattle will contain longhorn. Others say a different kind of fencing is needed.

I only have barbed wire right now. We had 5' goat fencing over barbed wire on much of the property but a renter stole it. I can't afford to replace it at this point. We've tried electrified fencing and it's just such a pain - it always has problems and I don't want to mess with it.

If I get longhorns and barbed wire only, will I be chasing my cattle all over the neighborhood? I am getting calves and raise them to be as gentle as possible, but I would like to get a bull calf.

Thanks

You can't do anything with them?!

I was recently at the ITLA show in OKC and it was a great event. But when speaking to one person in administration, they said the problem with steers is that you can't do anything with them (?!!) So sad that any breeder would say this. Why? because you can do tons of things with steers! It's seems that for the most part, the industry is totally missing the boat when it comes to promoting and marketting Texas Longhorn steers. Too bad. Too sad. Meanwhile here is two year old heifer Premier Exxonna's latest video. Hope you enjoy it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-Gf-OvimhU

I know I'm long over due on replying to this. I grew up in South Eastern PA, Delaware County to be exact. There are some great local longhorn people around you. Give me a call at 540.687.0050 or email me at beardavidson@ymail.com and I'd love to visit with you about them.

Sorry to hear that you are having to sell your herd. I am not exactly sure where you are located, but I would suggest placing an ad on Craigslist in your area. I have had success in the past with selling animals on that site. Also would say maybe posting the sale information at your vet's office, feed store, or any other stores that are frequented by potential buyers.

Ranch Sold - How to Sell My Longhorns?

I am looking for any help and guidance from my fellow Texas Longhorn breeders for help and advice in selling my herd.

We started with one cow in 2007 and now I have 25 to sell. I have never sold any cattle and only gave two heifers away to a friend before. I did setup a website and put up a hired hand software site, but of course now I am stumped for how to get traffic and finding buyers.

So how else do you sell your longhorns? Does keyword based Google Adwords work or should I just load the cattle in a trailer and ship them to the loval sale barn?

The last option seems obvious, but the idea that my cattle would be headed direct to the local processor is not the outcome I want for what I think is a great herd of registered (ITLA and TLBAA) longhorns.

Any and all help and opinion is appreciated.

Gavin

cooperative agreement

I just read the front page regarding a "cooperative agreement" between the ITLA and TLMA. Congratulations to both organizations. I hope this is just the beginning of a great partnership to promote the breed. I truly believe joining the LWC and the ITLA Convention will be a great event. I will be making plans to attend.

RE: Have no idea how to raise a calf

The mama probably isn't mean at all, probably was manhandled as a calf before you got her and she is just plain scared of you and worried about her baby. Hand feeding is a good way to win their heart and develop trust. If you want info on "how to" halter train the calf, click: www.premierlonghorns.com and go to the Information/Longhorn Tips link
